FITCHBURG -- Irene M. (Shanteler) Koutrakos, 71, of 665 Townsend St., died on April 18, in HealthAlliance Hospital/Leominster Hospital, after an illness.

She was born on Dec. 9, 1938, in Newport, R.I., daughter of the late Louis and Lillian (Rogers) Shanteler. She attended schools in Newport, R.I.. She loved her grandchildren and family and enjoyed having dinner with them Friday evenings at Donnelly’s Tavern. Mrs. Koutrakos enjoyed cooking and baking Greek foods. She also enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, was proud of her Irish heritage and was an avid bingo player. She witnessed the wedding of JFK while living in Newport.

She leaves her husband of 55 years, Michael Koutrakos; one son, William Koutrakos and his wife, Leta, of Templeton; four daughters, Helen Lallo of Connecticut, Pamela (Koutrakos) Devlin and her husband, Gary, of Leominster, Karen Koutrakos of Fitchburg and Christina Goguen and her husband, Roger, of Templeton; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Michael W. Koutrakos Jr., on Dec. 7, 1989.

KOUTRAKOS -- The funeral will be held on Monday, April 21, from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Saint Bernard’s Church, 240 Water St., Fitchburg. Burial will be Tuesday, April 22, at 1 p.m. in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours are on Sunday, April 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01710.
